The dragon is a legendary creature of myth. The general conception of the dragon is thought to be different in the

East and West. The dragon in the East is considered sacred, and it has been treated as a creature of spirit.

It is said that dragons used to live in the mountains, in the sea, and in the lakes of Japan. These dragons have long

been the subject of paintings. Famous Japanese painters such as Hokusai, Yusuyo Kaiho and Hogai Kanou have left us famous paintings of dragons.Painting dragons requires technical skill, mental strength, and good physical condition. When drawing dragons, we should avoid meat and alcohol, and should be mindful of our behavior.

I usually paint in oils.

I also use gold leaf, mud, and water, which are traditional materials in Japanese art. All of these come directly from places in nature such as the mountains, waterfalls, and rivers.

I carefully draw the scales that cover the outer bodies of the dragon one scale at a time. After painting dragons many times, an artist can achieve an effect in which the dragon’s form appears transparent like the surface of painted ceramics. In the artist’s final production of the painting, the depiction of the dragon is very realistic, as if the dragon actually exists right in front of you.

However, there are very few painters who paint dragons nowadays. I’ve developed this painting skill over the course of many years of practice and through strengthening my powers of concentration through Zen Buddhism. Now, I am prepared to draw these sacred creatures, which have engaged the minds and spirits of painting masters from ancient times long since passed.
